I was almost in tears of relief while listening to this podcast. It was so refreshing to hear advocates bringing what is common knowledge to me and the industries I work in (I can’t afford to leave my day job as a field engineer to be a front line responder like my Chief would like). We REALLY need to infuse some of the best practices into the fire and ems areas (to wit what Skip and others have said and now Steve and Roberta counsel). This lack of knowledge of “best practices” in private sector in my department is a significant frustration, but a significant opportunity for me to add value).
Chris spoke of “…thinking about who would replace him…”. I would encourage approaching that thought a bit differently, specifically thinking in terms of a) what do I know/have learned that I can teach/delegate to others in my organization, and b) what of “my bosses job” can I do now?
One should be constantly trying to spread the knowledge so that when a transition/decision is required (either premeditated or emergent), folks have the best base of information and skill to try and honor that task. They may not have enough to give the best answer or take the best action or take their supervisors place, but they have the encouragement and tools to try.
